Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.
That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who believes the Magpies are tracking the winger heading into the January transfer window.
Eddie Howe’s side wanted sign a winger all summer, with various names linked such as Moussa Diaby and Jack Harrison. However, they were unable to bring one in. Instead, we saw a goalkeeper, left-back, centre-back and striker arrive.
Newcastle will likely return to the market when it reopens in 2023, having already seen this season that they are lacking quality out wide. It was clear for all to see during the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Magpies were very poor in the final third without Allan Saint-Maximin, highlighting the need for further attacking reinforcements.
And Mudryk would certainly be an exciting addition.
Newcastle interested in Mudryk
The Ukrainian winger is one of Europe’s most wanted players right now. He was a target for multiple Premier League clubs during the summer, but remained a Shakhtar player.
The 21-year-old has since enjoyed a strong start to the season, leading to even more speculation that he could be on his way out of the club.
And according to Jacobs, Newcastle are looking at possibly making a move for the exciting wide forward.
Jacobs wrote on Twitter: “Bit more on Shakhtar winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, who has two #UCL goals in two games. Mudryk is hoping for a January move and told me he “couldn’t say no” to #AFC. Several European clubs now tracking him, including Newcastle, Sevilla, Leverkusen and Ajax.”
He adds that Mudryk sees January as ‘the right time to move‘.
A very exciting target
Mudryk looks like he has the potential to become an absolute superstar. His speed in and out possession is obscene, and makes him a nightmare for defenders.
The youngster is already shining on the biggest stage, scoring twice in this season’s Champions League. His side are in Group F alongside Real Madrid, Celtic and RB Leipzig.
Two games in and he’s already scored against Celtic and Leipzig, with former forward Chris Sutton calling him ‘rapid‘ after his goal against the Hoops. Now Real Madrid await after the international break.
A blockbuster performance against the European champions will only increase the interest in Murdyk. He appears to be a man in demand, and is another exciting player Newcastle are looking at.
Mudryk certainly fits the profile of what the Magpies want. We have constantly been looking to sign young players with huge potential who can already make a difference immediately. Dan Ashworth wants players who can grow alongside the club.
It looks like Mudryk is certainly capable of that, and he would be an exciting January addition. However, a deal might be difficult given the amount of competition.
