Newcastle United could have a clear run at signing James Maddison this summer following an update on Manchester City’s plans.
Pep Guardiola’s side have also been linked with signing the Leicester City midfielder. It was reported on deadline day that the 26-year-old was on Man City’s radar, while the Northern Echo recently claimed that Newcastle would face competition from the Premier League champions.
However, the Telegraph have suggested that this will not be the case.
In a report about Man City’s plans for the summer despite being charged by the Premier League with 115 breaches of financial rules, the Telegraph state that they have distanced themselves from Maddison.
Their primary focus appears to be on signing Jude Bellingham, who has also been tentatively linked with a move to St James’ Park.

While Bellingham going to Man City could be bad news for the rest of the Premier League, news of them dropping their interest in Maddison will be music to Newcastle’s ears.
Boost for Newcastle as they eye fresh James Maddison move
Talk of Man City distancing themselves from Maddison comes on the same day that it was reported that Newcastle will make a fresh move for him this summer.
The Northern Echo have claimed that the Magpies will try to sign him for the third transfer window in a row, after failing to get him last summer and in January.
The summer of 2023 could be different. Newcastle look on course to be playing European football, and could be able to offer Maddison the chance to play in the Champions League – something he has never done in his career.
On top of that, he could be in the final 12 months of his Leicester contract if he does not sign an extension. That might make him more affordable, and make the Foxes more interested in cashing in.
Man City exiting the conversation is certainly a boost, as a move to the Eithad to work with Pep Guardiola would have been massively appealing.
But so is the chance to play at St James’ Park for this Newcastle team under the guidance of Eddie Howe. The Magpies are desperate to sign him, and are hoping it is third time lucky.
