Manchester City are interested in a move for Leicester City star James Maddison this summer, after claims Newcastle United also want to sign him.

That’s according to Daily Mail journalist Jack Gaughan.

He reports that the 26-year-old is one of the midfielders the Sky Blues are monitoring ahead of the summer window, as they are interested in bringing the Foxes man to the Etihad.

Maddison is a long-term target of Eddie Howe’s.

The Magpies even had two bids worth up to £50m rejected by Leicester last summer.

This interest was also brought into January, as the England international was identified as the Toon’s top target for the window.

Although journalist Miguel Delaney suggested Maddison could potentially leave before tonight’s deadline, The Athletic claim the Foxes won’t be selling any of their key players ahead of the summer window.

This isn’t great news for Howe, who has been desperate to land Maddison at St James’ Park for a while now.

City are notorious for signing another club’s star player, for them to only use them occasionally off the bench. This was the case with Aston Villa and Jack Grealish, although he starts more regularly now, and it has happened again with Kalvin Phillips – who came from Leeds over the summer.

Years prior, the choice between the Sky Blues and the Toon would have meant the player would have ended up at the Etihad.

However, with Newcastle’s incredible turnaround this season (as well as their increased finances to play with), this is no longer the case.

Hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by BBC pundit Gary Lineker, Maddison could end up playing Champions League football on Tyneside.

He is also guaranteed minutes at St James’ Park, whereas this isn’t the case with Pep Guardiola.

Therefore, if the player has to pick between the two in the summer, he should definitely choose Newcastle.
