Newcastle transfer news: Toon keep tabs as Arsenal swoop for Caicedo

Newcastle United are reportedly still keeping an eye on Moises Caicedo, but it is Arsenal who have made a major move to sign the midfielder.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Friday that the Gunners have made a £60million bid to sign the 21-year-old from Brighton.

However, that offer has been rejected. The Athletic report that the Seagulls do not want to sell Caicedo during the January transfer window, and will not entertain offers.

If Caicedo were to move to the Emirates, he would become the second Brighton player to make the move this month after Leandro Trossard joined Arsenal for £27million.

Now they want Caicedo, a player who has been on Newcastle’s radar during the January window.

Hard to see Newcastle landing Moises Caicedo

In a report on Arsenal’s Caicedo bid, 90min state that the Magpies continue to keep tabs on the Ecuadorian, alongside Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Caicedo was actually brought to the Premier League by the now Toon Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, back when he was on Brighton’s payroll. Ashworth is a big fan of the midfielder, and so is Eddie Howe.

It was recently claimed by the Athletic that the Newcastle boss believes that Caicedo is the ideal profile to play the ‘number six’ role in his side.

However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to see the youngster making the move to St James’ Park. England’s biggest teams are chasing him, and are likely prepared to offer more money than Newcastle – despite our newfound wealth.

Arsenal have put £60million on the table, which is £5million more than what Chelsea recently offered.

Brighton are adamant that Caicedo is going nowhere, but a transfer surely must be on the horizon in 2023. Roberto De Zerbi has even suggested that a move in the summer could happen.

But with so many major clubs circling, it is hard to see how Newcastle can tempt Caicedo to move to the North East for a reasonable fee.

It’s a dream scenario for Brighton – they have got the Premier League’s top teams scrambling to be involved in a bidding war. But that is exactly what Newcastle don’t want, as they look to ensure they don’t spend over the odds in the transfer market.

With a £60million bid rejected, it is obviously going to take even more than that to prise Caicedo away from the Amex Stadium. That means that Newcastle would need to break their transfer record for him, which almost certainly isn’t going to happen this month. And it is hard to imagine it happening in the summer either.
