Rafa Benitez is a big fan of Jorgen Strand Larsen amid his surprise links with a move to Newcastle United.
Strand Larsen has been linked with Newcastle United as the club consider whether to try and replace Alexander Isak or not.
Isak has asked to leave Newcastle amid interest from Liverpool, although it remains to be seen if PIF do sell the striker this summer.
Still, Eddie Howe wanted to add a new forward to the Newcastle United squad even before Isak asked to leave, with Callum Wilson having left St James’ Park upon the expiration of his contract.
Wolves forward Strand Larsen emerged as something of a surprise link on Friday. For those who don’t know a huge amount about the Norway international, Benitez has previously provided a ringing endorsement.

Rafa Benitez explained Jorgen Strand Larsen’s style of play
Strand Larsen worked under the former Newcastle United manager at Celta Vigo, before he made the move to the Premier League.
Under the Spaniard’s watch, the forward scored nine goals in 30 games while registering two assists.
Speaking to La Voz de Galicia in March 2024, Benitez said: “He is a player who is quite consistent and that he is increasingly embellishing it with quality details and that of an important footballer.
| Games | Goals | Assists |
| 30 | 9 | 2 |
“He has aspects of the game that need improvement, and he knows it. He is a very hard worker. He has improved in finishing and in understanding what he has to do depending on his teammates and his rivals. He is in a growth phase, but he is young and has a lot of desire.”
“When he adjusts a few things, he has all the potential to go to the Premier League.”
How Jorgen Strand Larsen compares to William Osula
As it stands, William Osula looks to be the only senior striker who is guaranteed to play for Newcastle next season.
Hopefully, Isak stays, but that is no longer looking as certain as it once did.
Strand Larsen does compare rather favourably to Osula, although that’s hardly surprising because the Newcastle forward did not play on a regular basis.
| 2024/25 Premier League statistics | Jorgen Strand Larsen | William Osula |
| Games | 35 | 14 |
| Goals | 14 | 1 |
| Assists | 4 | 0 |
| Shots/90 | 1.5 | 0.3 |
| Aerial duels won/90 | 1.9 | 0.4 |
Still, he does look like an upgrade on what Howe has in his squad behind Isak.
If Strand Larsen is the Isak replacement, questions will be asked. Right now, however, there’s little doubt he does make the squad stronger.
It will be interesting to see if Newcastle really do make their move for him during what remains of the summer transfer window.
