‘Priority’… Luke Edwards now shares what Newcastle’s current stance is regarding Joelinton

Newcastle United might have to replace one of their most important players this summer if things do not go their way.

There is a fear that a major name might have to leave St James’ Park, as a big money departure would allow Newcastle United to heavily reinvest amid the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Bruno Guimaraes is the player who has been the most heavily linked with a move away from the club, but he appeared to shut down the talk of him leaving after his brace against Nottingham Forest.

The situation surrounding Joelinton is much more complicated, and that is because of his contract situation. His current deal expires in 2025, meaning he will be able to leave on a free next summer.

Newcastle do not want that, and have been looking to hand him a new contract. However, negotiations are yet to result in a new deal and have reached a stalemate.

If a new deal is not signed, Newcastle will need to sell Joelinton this summer, which is currently likely according to the Daily Mail.

Now the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has provided an update on the situation, amid claims that the Magpies could replace him with Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing.

Newcastle still looking to give Joelinton a new contract

Luke Edwards has taken to X to comment on Newcastle’s interest in Billing and where things stand with Joelinton and his future.

He wrote: “The answer on Billing has been consistent whenever I’ve asked. Newcastle like player and he was on their possible list in Jan but “nothing happening” in terms or them tying to sign him. Priority is to try and persuade Joelinton to sign new contract. Which makes sense to me.”

Newcastle must do all they can to keep Joelinton

Newcastle must not give up on Joelinton. They desperately need him to stay. He is so valuable to Eddie Howe’s team, with no other player capable of offering what he does.

Philip Billing may have been identified as a replacement, but that would be massively underwhelming. He is nowhere near Joelinton’s level, and the Denmark international coming in for the 27-year-old would seriously disappoint Toon fans.

The priority has to be to agree a new contract with the Brazilian. That must be the hierarchy’s focus between now and the summer transfer window. He is invaluable to Eddie Howe, and should be recognised as such with a new deal.
