Paul Merson shares what would be a ‘bad, bad’ loss for Newcastle United in the transfer market

Newcastle United have seen a number of their key players linked with moves away for what feels like months now.

Indeed, the prospect of having to sell one of Newcastle’s prized assets was in fact first raised back in the January transfer window, although ultimately none of them left.

That has so far remained the case this summer, despite Bruno Guimaraes having a £100m release clause active in his contract at one point – as well as Anthony Gordon reportedly being tempted by a move to Liverpool.

Still, there is some way to go in the transfer market and big names could still depart, even if they aren’t the prized trio of Guimaraes, Gordon or Alexander Isak.

Kieran Trippier, after all, is said to be facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park.

The veteran defender is believed to have been disappointed about being removed as team captain so close to the start of the season and is attracting interest from elsewhere.

Now, Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on Trippier’s future.

Paul Merson believes Kieran Trippier would be a huge loss for Newcastle

Speaking on Sky Sports News at 12.14pm BST on 24/08/2024, the pundit said selling Trippier would be a “bad, bad loss” for the football club.

“Whoever gets him will be very, very fortunate, and it will be a bad, bad loss for Newcastle Football Club,” he said.

Eddie Howe does not want Kieran Trippier to leave Newcastle this summer

It’s understandable that Trippier may want to leave should Tino Livramento establish himself as the club’s first choice at right-back.

At this stage of his career, trying to find a club for whom he’d be a regular starter makes sense, before his advancing years make that a much more unlikely prospect.

However, for his part, Eddie Howe does not want Trippier to leave this summer. The England international is still seen as a valuable asset, perhaps explaining Merson’s comments on the matter.
