Paolo Di Canio tips ‘devastating’ forward to sign for Newcastle this summer

Former Sunderland manager and West Ham forward Paolo Di Canio has backed Federico Chiesa to sign for Newcastle United this summer.

The Magpies are already on the brink of signing one Italian, with Sandro Tonali set to join Eddie Howe’s side. And there is a chance he could be joined by Chiesa.

It was reported on Thursday night that Newcastle are interested in the forward, and have asked Juventus for information regarding his availability. Chiesa has already received one offer from a Premier League club, but turned down Aston Villa’s advances.

However, Newcastle should be much more appealing, as we have the luxury of competing in next season’s Champions League, which is something that Villa cannot offer. Neither can Juventus, having finished seventh in Serie A last season after a points deduction.

The lack of Champions League football could see Chiesa leave the Turin giants, and Di Canio believes that Newcastle could be a perfect fit for the 25-year-old.

Di Canio can see Chiesa playing for Newcastle

The 54-year-old has spoke to Sky Italia about Chiesa possibly heading to St James’ Park alongside Tonali.

“I see Chiesa in Newcastle’s from three, provided that he’s the one we saw at the Euros,” he said.

“He is a devastating player on the wing, especially on counter-attacks. I imagine Chiesa on the left and he could be devastating with Isak up front.”

Toon fans will be buzzing if Chiesa follows Tonali to Tyneside

Di Canio is keen to see Chiesa play alongside Alexander Isak in a Newcastle United shirt, and so are Toon fans.

They are two incredibly fast players who boast incredible dribbling ability, and could form a devastating partnership on Tyneside.

A deal for Chiesa has to be appealing to Eddie Howe, as the Italian is capable of playing anywhere across the forward line. He can be dangerous off the left, right or even through the middle.

That type of versatility makes him a tantalising option for the Magpies, and it will be interesting to see if we make an official move for him following the Tonali deal.

Newcastle have not had much luck with Italians in the past, and that will hopefully change when Tonali arrives – and it would be even more certain to change if he was joined by Chiesa.
