‘Outstanding’ 25-year-old player will not be leave his club in January, despite interest from Newcastle

One Newcastle United target now looks like he is set to stay at his current club until at least the summer despite being linked to a move elsewhere.

Newcastle are known to be in the market for a new goalkeeper following Nick Pope’s injury and Aaron Ramsdale was believed to be a possible candidate to take on loan.

However, talkSPORT are now claiming that the shot-stopper is set to stay at Arsenal until at least the summer despite falling out of favour with manager Mikel Arteta.

Ramsdale set to stay at Arsenal despite Newcastle’s interest

Despite the fact that he is now second choice behind David Raya who joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford in the summer, Ramsdale will have to wait another six months if he is to leave the Emirates.

The ‘outstanding‘ 25-year-old has made just five appearances in the Premier League this season and just 10 across all competitions, and the fear now is that he may fall out of England contention.

With a European tournament right around the corner this summer, Ramsdale will be wanting to play every week to ensure he keeps his spot in Gareth Southgate’s side, which is why a loan move to Newcastle felt like the perfect move for everyone.

However, the former Bournemouth and Sheffield United man will have to rely on his previous experiences with the England camp to secure his place in the Three Lions team in June.

Newcastle may need a new goalkeeper in January

Martin Dubravka has really stepped up in the last two games and the hope is that he’s regained his confidence after being out of the team for so long, but his run of performances before that was very worrying.

You don’t realise how big of a presence Pope is in goal until he’s out of the team but it’s fair to say that Newcastle missed the £10m man as they went on a run of seven defeats in eight games following his injury.

It’s not yet clear if the recent performances of Dubravka are enough to convince Eddie Howe to keep him in the team beyond January, but a keeper was certainly one of his priorities heading into the transfer window.

A deal for Ramsdale now looks to be off the table and it’s unlikely that they splash out on a new shot-stopper, but we’ll have to wait and see how important Howe views this potential upgrade.
