Danny Simpson has now claimed that Newcastle United should go out and sign Aaron Ramsdale in the January window after Martin Dubravka’s performance against Tottenham.
With Nick Pope’s injury set to keep him out long-term, the goalkeeping situation at Newcastle has become a huge topic of conversation in the last few days.
Former Newcastle man Danny Simpson spoke on Stadium Astro after the defeat to Spurs to urge Newcastle to sign Ramsdale in the next window.
Ramsdale and Newcastle would be a ‘perfect match’
Ramsdale had impressed during his first season at the Emirates and there was almost an expectation that he would eventually take over from Jordan Pickford to become England’s number one goalkeeper.
But with the arrival of David Raya in the summer, the 25-year-old is not getting any game time and may have to leave North London in January to salvage any hopes of being in the team for Euro 2024 next summer.
Newcastle have emerged as a possible destination for Ramsdale, whether that be on loan or permanently, and Simpson thinks his personality would suit the St James’ Park crowd to a tee.
On Stadium Astro, Simpson said: “I personally think so. There’s an opportunity that’s come about now and I’d be surprised if Newcastle don’t look at De Gea or Ramsdale.
“I’ve been up there I’ve played there, I think Ramsdale and Newcastle are a perfect match with his character and the way the fans are up there.
“Whereas you look at De Gea who’s not played for six months, what condition is he in? We don’t know.”

Dubravka’s days in goal may be numbered
There was hope for Dubravka who not only had the support of his manager Eddie Howe but also from the supporters who were backing him to fill in for the injured Pope.
After some nervy performances against Tottenham and Everton, however, his future at the club looks to be in doubt with Newcastle needing a top quality shot-stopper if they are to compete for a Champions League place.
They are already starting to drift away from the top four after those two consecutive defeats and must get back on track against Fulham on Saturday with a huge three points.
Both David de Gea and Hugo Lloris have been presented as options, but Simpson is adamant that Ramsdale would be the preferred choice to keep Newcastle competing at the top of the Premier League.
