Newcastle interested in signing 25-year-old goalkeeper but need to change club’s mind to get him

Newcastle United are now keen to bring in 25-year-old Arsenal man in January, but the Gunners are unwilling to let the player leave on loan next month.

Newcastle have been without Nick Pope for a run of games now after he injured his shoulder against Manchester United and questions have been asked about Martin Dubravka’s ability in the last few matches.

A new report from The Athletic now suggests that Aaron Ramsdale has become a big target for the Magpies, but that a loan deal is very unlikely to happen unless there is a ‘compelling option to buy’.

Although the results may not have been entirely his fault, some of the goalkeeping from Dubravka has been questionable in recent games and it’s no real surprise that Newcastle have started shipping goals in games after Pope’s injury.

The Slovakian was previously a good shot-stopper for Newcastle in desperate times when the club was battling relegation year after year, but he isn’t at the level that the Magpies require anymore.

With Pope looking likely to be out for the rest of or most of the season now, Newcastle cannot really afford to have their goalkeeper struggling so often if they are to turn this run of form around.

Champions League football is slipping away from Newcastle’s grasp, but there is definitely still hope to qualify for a European tournaments and the Arsenal goalkeeper may help them achieve that.

Temporary deal for Arsenal man would have been ideal for Newcastle

Newcastle will still have faith in Pope to stay as Newcastle’s number one for the near future, with so many other areas of the squad a bigger priority to improve, but they could definitely use a temporary replacement while he recovers.

The report from The Athletic suggests that this would be almost impossible for Arsenal to do unless there is a significant fee as an option to buy in the summer.

Newcastle may be able to negotiate a deal next month when the window opens, but at the minute it feels unlikely that the 25-year-old will be moving to the North East unless the Magpies feel it is a necessity and stump up the cash.
