Newcastle United are reportedly set to miss out on the signing of Christian Eriksen.
The playmaker has been a man in demand this summer, available on a free after only agreeing a short term deal with Brentford in January.
The Bees have been trying to make him stay, while Newcastle have also been in the mix for his signature. However, it looks as though he’s going to Manchester United.
According to the Athletic, Eriksen has verbally agreed to join the Red Devils and is willing to sign a three-year deal at Old Trafford.

It’s a blow for Eddie Howe, who could really have benefitted from adding Eriksen to his squad. There was reportedly an offer on the table from the Magpies, but it looks like he’s heading to the North West instead.
Newcastle will need to spend big to get someone like Eriksen this summer
Eriksen would have been a brilliant signing for Newcastle. Described as ‘magic‘ in the past, his craft and invention in possession would have been a real boost to our midfield.

Combine that with the fact he was available on a free and a move to St James’ Park would have been an absolute dream.
Signing a new centre-midfielder isn’t a priority for Howe, but the club have been linked with new additions. An extra option in the middle might arrive depending on how much of the budget is left after a striker and winger join.
But for Newcastle to get someone as good as Eriksen, they’re going to have to spend big money. That might not be possible this summer, with the Toon owners looking to be savvy in the transfer market.

Eriksen is 30, but would have been a more than worthwhile signing on a free despite his age. However, we’re not going to spend a sizeable amount of cash on a similar player.
If we’re to sign a midfielder permanently, they will be around 24 and have a much longer shelf life. But that will probably cost the club even more money, making it even more unlikely.
Signing Eriksen was always a long shot given the competition. But him rejecting a move to the North East will cost Newcastle millions if they decide to go for an alternative midfielder.
