Newcastle transfer news: Toon hope to hold talks with Christian Eriksen

If Newcastle United are going to sign Christian Eriksen, they will need to fend off interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder is available on a free this summer, with his Brentford contract expiring. Eriksen only signed a six-month deal with the Bees in January, and has reportedly turned down the chance to extend his contract.

That’s led to multiple clubs tussling for his signature – including Newcastle.

The Northern Echo claimed in April that Newcastle were ‘hopeful’ of signing Eriksen this summer.

They have now provided an update on the situation, and the picture is no longer as promising. The Northern Echo state that the club have spoke to Eriksens’s representatives, but accept a deal will be very difficult.

That’s because the Denmark international has Man United and Spurs interested in him.

Erik ten Hag and Antonio Conte have both worked with Eriksen previously, and are in a much better position to land the 30-year-old.

Man United are in the midst of a rebuild, and Eriksen could be central to that. Meanwhile, a move to Tottenham would signal an emotional return to North London, where he’d be able to play in the Champions League.

Newcastle want face-to-face talks with Eriksen

In contrast, Newcastle are in a less promising position to lure Eriksen to St James’ Park.

However, the Northern Echo add that the club want to hold face-to-face talks with him to try and convince him over a move to the North East.

Eriksen would be a sensational signing for Newcastle. He’d add creativity to a Toon team that often struggled for goals last season.

He’d be a hugely popular arrival, having completed a remarkable return to football earlier this year after suffering a cardiac arrest last summer.

His free agent status makes him even more appealing, especially given the ridiculous fees Newcastle are being quoted for some players. However, they would have to offer a substantial wage package.

As it stands, it feels incredibly unlikely that the Magpies will be able to land Eriksen ahead of Man United or Spurs. But hopefully the owners get the chance to sell their Toon vision to the playmaker. That could potentially turn the tide.
