Newcastle United’s recruitment has been a major part of their success in the PIF era.

Indeed, they have planned out the squad coherently, with pretty much every signing hitting the ground running.

Clearly, there is little reason to change what Newcastle are doing but that does not mean it is easy to watch as a supporter.

Things have been a little slow this summer. Sandro Tonali has been brought in but even that was delayed.

Harvey Barnes has been strongly linked with a move to the club too but despite some promising initial reports, there has been little positive movement since.

Now, Newcastle could have some competition.

Sky Sports claim West Ham remain keen on a move for the Leicester winger.

The Hammers recently sold Declan Rice for a huge fee to Arsenal and could yet make a move for Barnes despite Newcastle’s interest.

In fact, they even claim the Magpies are yet to launch a bid for Barnes despite the strong links between the two parties.

Either way, the 25-year-old looks set to leave the King Power Stadium following their relegation, having been left out of their recent pre-season squads.

Frustrating start to the window for Eddie Howe

While it has been so good at Newcastle for over a year now, that does not mean fans can’t vent some slight frustration about how slow this summer has been.

Barnes, after all, scored 13 Premier League goals last season even during a poor season and would be an exciting addition. Hailed as “unbelievable” by Jurgen Klopp, it’s easy to see why there would be interest.

Eddie Howe himself has admitted there have been some “difficult days” this summer, with FFP proving a problem.

There is no reason to panic and fans must have trust in the owners but with an increased schedule next season, it’s hardly ideal not to have more reinforcement brought in yet.
