Newcastle won’t be able to sign 13 goal striker cheaply, there’s no release clause

Newcastle United were keen on adding a striker to their ranks in January but ultimately nothing came to fruition.

There were reports that Newcastle had placed a bid for 18-year-old Nurnberg striker Can Uzun who has been impressing in the German second division, though nothing ever came of the move.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg has now claimed that there are a number of clubs, including Newcastle, who want to sign Uzun this summer but that the striker has no release clause in his contract.

Striker won’t come cheap amid Newcastle’s interest

Having scored 13 goals in 20 appearances this season across the 2. Bundesliga as well as the DFB-Pokal, Uzun has attracted a lot of interest from some top teams like Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Inter Milan.

There was some hope that the teenager would be available for a bargain price in the summer, though it appears that there is no release clause whatsoever and Nurnberg will be able to charge a fair price for their star man.

Newcastle will almost certainly be in the market for a new striker this summer with Callum Wilson believed to be leaving as he has just one year left on his contract.

Ideally, they would target a young attacker who may not demand to be starting every game and would be happy playing behind Alexander Isak, and Uzun could fit that perfectly.

Newcastle prepare for a difficult summer

While it surely can’t be as bad as January where there was virtually nothing to spend, Newcastle may still find it somewhat tough to navigate through the Premier League’s financial rules in the summer.

Of course, they will have the addition of Champions League money, commercial deals and anything their raise through player sales, but there isn’t an exact figure that we know they will have to spend.

For players like Uzun who have no release clause, clubs are well aware of their value and with so many interested in signing the striker they can raise the price even higher to find the highest bidder.

Newcastle will once again have to be smart with their money and identify the key areas in the squad that so desperately need addressing.
