Newcastle United are planning to revisit a deal for one of their January targets in the summer with Eddie Howe keen on bringing in an immediate alternative.

Newcastle have been linked with a move for Atalanta’s Ederson for a few weeks now but there are some concerns about a potential move.

A report from The Athletic has suggested that Howe is worried that the Brazilian wouldn’t be able to adapt to the Premier League quickly enough to have an impact this season.

Howe wants Premier League quality for Newcastle

It’s been a tricky season for Newcastle and Howe so far this season with the unexpected number of injuries they have had to deal with that has limited what they can achieve.

While there are a fair few targets who are admired by Newcastle, Howe is keen to make sure that any January incomings are proven quality players who will be able to help the team out immediately.

Last season, for example, Howe wanted to bring in Anthony Gordon because of his efforts in England and while it took a while for him to get up to scratch, the 46-year-old knew there was a talent there.

That’s not to say Howe is entirely opposed to bringing in foreign talent like Ederson who is valued at £35m, but he would ideally look to sign those types of players in the summer when he has more time to work with them and can integrate them into the squad.

Newcastle set for a big summer

While there has been a lot of negativity recently surrounding what Newcastle and Howe can and can’t do in regards to transfers because of the Profit and Sustainability Rules, it could be a huge summer for the club.

There isn’t a lot of room to spend currently, but by the summer the club will have received their fund for competing in the Champions League this season while their new deal with Adidas will also kick in.

There may also be sale within the squad with Callum Wilson pretty much expected to leave in the summer if not this January due to having just 18 months left on his contract.

Having likely missed out on top four this season, the owners will want to make a big push next year to try and get back amongst Europe’s elite and elevate the stature of the club once again.
