Newcastle United have set their sights on Atalanta midfielder Ederson as a potential replacement for Sandro Tonali.
The Magpies are very keen to find a suitable midfielder to fill in for the suspended Italian who will be ineligible to play until August 2024.
As reported by TuttoMercatoWeb, Newcastle have now identified Atalanta’s Ederson as a star candidate, though the Italian club’s asking price may be too steep for a January move.
Newcastle have to add to their midfield in January
There are no two ways about it, Newcastle simply have to add to their midfield ranks in January if they are to compete for any of the European spots in the Premier League.
The recent injury crisis has proven that Newcastle cannot cope without key members like Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes in the team and will be forced to enter the market for a new midfielder in January.
Ederson’s form at Atalanta this season has shown why he could be perfect for Newcastle, but it will be a tough ask to bring him to Tyneside.
The Nerazzurri are looking to double their profits on their Brazilian star who they value at £35m after signing him from Salernitana last summer for around £12m plus a player exchange in Matteo Lovato.
It’s unclear whether Newcastle will be willing to pay that much for an unproven talent in England, but in this current market and with teams knowing the finances at the club, there’s little chance of finding a cheaper alternative who plays at a similar level.

Ederson’s breakthrough season at Atalanta
After just 16 games the 24-year-old is already having the best goalscoring season of his career after netting five times in 16 games across Serie A and the Europa League.
Eddie Howe’s style of play does mean that the midfielders are in great positions making in late runs into the box, and yet none of Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock or Joelinton are particularly prolific in this area.
This could be the perfect move for both parties should the former Brazilian youth international keep up this impressive goalscoring form and adapt it to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.
