Newcastle United would now like to sign ‘outstanding’ player on loan on transfer deadline day

Newcastle United are open for business on transfer deadline day, as they aim to give Eddie Howe’s squad one last boost before the window slams shut.

However, Newcastle United‘s major deal is unlikely to be completed. Thursday brought news that Newcastle are walking away from the Marc Guehi deal, with Paul Mitchell unable to agree a fee with Crystal Palace.

The Guehi situation has been extremely frustrating, and it has now culminated in an uncomfortable final day of the transfer window for Toon fans.

Newcastle are willing to do business on deadline day, but only if the right deals come up. There will be no panic buys, even if Eddie Howe is clearly in need of reinforcements.

Newcastle linked with James Trafford again

One position that Newcastle are well stocked in is goalkeeper. Yet that is the position that could be strengthened before the transfer window closes.

The Magpies tried to sign James Trafford from Burnley earlier this summer, only for the deal to stall when Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived from Nottingham Forest.

But Newcastle are back in talks with Burnley over Trafford, and he is one to watch ahead of Friday’s 11pm deadline.

What Newcastle could do with their goalkeepers on transfer deadline day

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle would still like to complete a deal for Trafford on the final day of the transfer window.

They add that a deal would probably be a loan move with an obligation to buy in the future – similar to what Newcastle did with Lewis Hall last summer.

However, Newcastle’s interest in Trafford may hinge on another goalkeeper leaving the club on transfer deadline day.

Odysseas Vlachodimos could be loaned out, and the Daily Mail state that he has interest from Anderlecht. However, they add that the 30-year-old’s wages are too high for them at this moment in time.

Signing Trafford will not appease Newcastle fans

While Trafford is an ‘outstanding‘ goalkeeper with a lot of potential, a deal for the 21-year-old is not going to shift the mood on Tyneside regarding the club’s transfer business.

If Newcastle’s summer activity consists of three goalkeepers arriving – none of which are better than Nick Pope – then serious questions need to be asked.

It is even more laughable if the most expensive one leaves without playing a single minute, with Newcastle paying £20million for Vlachodimos. That deal coincided with Elliot Anderson going the other way to Nottingham Forest, as Newcastle scrambled to comply with PSR back in June.

There is real frustration over what has gone on behind the scenes at St James’ Park, with Newcastle on course to not sign anyone who majorly improves Howe’s starting XI.

That is a big concern, and leaves Howe under huge pressure to get the most out of the players he has already got.
