Newcastle United have made some changes to their goalkeeping department this summer, but there could be more on the horizon.

The Magpies have signed two goalkeepers this summer, with Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy signing for Newcastle United.

Their arrivals mean that Eddie Howe has five senior goalkeepers to choose from, which is far too many. On top of that, it has been suggested that Newcastle officials could sign one more goalkeeper, with James Trafford still linked with Newcastle.

It would be a major surprise to see him arrive at St James’ Park before the transfer window closes on August 30th, but that might not be the only goalkeeping change we see on Tyneside in the coming days.

Update on Odysseas Vlachodimos’ Newcastle United future

With five senior goalkeepers already at the club, someone needs to leave.

It had looked like Martin Dubravka would depart Newcastle, with the 35-year-old in the final year of his Toon contract.

However, he was on the bench on Saturday as Newcastle United beat Southampton 1-0. In contrast, Odysseas Vlachodimos was nowhere to be seen.

And, according to the Athletic, Vlachodimos could leave Newcastle United on loan before the summer transfer window closes.

They report that the Greece international is now the most likely goalkeeper to depart, despite only joining the club this summer.

Newcastle’s PSR nightmare epitomised by Vlachodimos situation

At the start of the summer, Newcastle United wanted to sign someone like Giorgi Mamardashvili or Aaron Ramsdale.

Then they lowered their expectations and pursued Trafford, only for that deal to be pushed to the side.

Instead, Newcastle were effectively forced to sign Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest as part of the deal that saw Elliot Anderson move to the City Ground.

Forest paid £35million for Anderson, but the Athletic recently reported that the deal is actually only worth £15million when the Vlachodimos fee is taken to account. That means Newcastle spent £20million on the 30-year-old.

That is a huge amount of money for a player who could now be loaned out without making a competitive appearance.

When he arrived, it was reported that Vlachodimos would challenge Nick Pope at Newcastle, but that has not proven to be the case. He is not even second choice, which became evident on Saturday during the 1-0 win over Southampton.

It is a staggering situation, and it sums up how much of a mess the club were in when it came to PSR.

They lost two major talents, and were effectively forced to sign a goalkeeper for big money that they had no intention of using. What a shambles.
