Bryan Mbeumo has officially been unveiled as a Manchester United player, but his reason for choosing them over Newcastle United will be seen as bizarre.

At one point, a move to Tyneside looked like the only destination for the 25-year-old. Bryan Mbeumo was coming off a brilliant season with Brentford, registering an impressive 27 goal contributions in the Premier League.

Newcastle United were looking to sign a right winger and had Mbeumo as their priority in the position. Reports suggested Mbeumo was Newcastle’s ‘dream target‘, with head coach Eddie Howe very eager to bring the Cameroon international to the club.

It also looked as if Mbeumo was open to joining Newcastle. In prior interviews, Mbeumo stated his admiration for St James’ Park and the Newcastle fans. However, the two parties could not come to an agreement when talks began, as Mbeumo had serious wage demands Newcastle simply could not agree to.

Now, Mbeumo has officially signed for Manchester United for a staggering £71million, but his reasoning for joining the Red Devils over the Magpies will surely leave many scratching their heads.

Bryan Mbeumo plans on winning trophies at Man United after £71m move

Mbeumo will earn around £150,000-a-week at Man United, a wage which would have made him Newcastle’s second-highest earner if he opted to join. With Howe eager to improve multiple positions this summer, he was not willing to give the former Brentford man what he wanted.

There would have also been concerns over his price tag. The fee Man United have paid would have made Mbeumo Newcastle’s most expensive player ever, so it may have been the case that he would have proven too costly.

Mbeumo was officially revealed as a Man United player on Monday evening, and in his first interview, he shared how he plans on winning “the biggest trophies” in the North West, despite their recent failures.

Speaking to Man United’s website, Mbeumo said: “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up.”

“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

“Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”

Newcastle United’s trophy prospects look much brighter than Man United’s

It remains to be seen how Mbeumo will perform in his new environment, and whether his brilliant season with the Bees was just a one-off or if his attacking returns will be a regular occurrence.

Newcastle fans will certainly be surprised by Mbeumo saying he wants to challenge for trophies. Man United are coming off a poor season which included a managerial sacking, a lack of impact when the new manager arrived, and a very fortunate road to the Europa League final.

One must not forget that Man United do not have European football next season, so there will be no chance of a repeat of last season. As for Newcastle, they are coming off the back of a memorable 2024/25 campaign. The Magpies ended their agonising wait for a trophy by beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Additionally, they qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the season – coincidentally due to Man United beating Aston Villa.

Mbeumo must be in it for the long haul if he is planning on winning silverware with Man United. The two clubs are on two completely different trajectories at the moment, so it could be a while before Old Trafford is graced with another trophy.
