Newcastle United truth on Leeds United trying to sign Matt Targett

Newcastle United defender Matt Targett has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds United this month.

The left-back is out of favour at St James’ Park, leading to speculation that Newcastle United could let Matt Targett go.

Geordie Boot Boys were told earlier this month that Newcastle are willing to loan Targett out, with the defender attracting interest from clubs in Europe.

Then came talk of a move closer to home, with Championship side Leeds United emerging as a potential suitor.

It was claimed by the Northern Echo that Leeds were set to sign the 29-year-old permanently, with Newcastle ready to cash in on Targett.

Whether Leeds United actually bid for Matt Targett

While there probably is a willingness to sort out an exit for Targett, talk of an imminent move to Elland Road is wide of the mark.

That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about the Targett to Leeds United situation.

“From what I understand, it was no more than interest from Leeds,” he said.

“They didn’t make a bid. They’re definitely not going to pay a fee for Matt Targett. He’s not an easy one to get out of Newcastle.

“We know Dean Smith at Charlotte FC still likes him, so that could be an option. And that could happen after Monday’s deadline as the MLS transfer window is still open.

“Leeds could be an option in the summer. But not for now. As I understand, he’s not going to Leeds.”

Newcastle can afford to let Matt Targett go

Talk of a permanent move to Leeds for Targett always felt fanciful. While he would not command a huge fee, it would surely be somewhere between £5million and £10million. On top of that, there is Targett’s wages at Newcastle United, with the former Aston Villa man reportedly earning £100,000-a-week.

A loan with an option to buy would perhaps make more sense. But, as Bailey says, Targett is a difficult player to get out of Newcastle due to the finances that would be required.

But while a move to Leeds is not imminent, it would not be a surprise if Targett’s future remained a topic of conversation between now and the transfer window closing on Monday.

While Eddie Howe does not want to weaken his Newcastle squad, the Magpies are well stocked at left-back, especially if Lloyd Kelly stays at St James’ Park.

It has been reported that Kelly will not leave Newcastle, following interest from Fenerbahce and Juventus.
