Newcastle United are about to enter an important January transfer window and Paul Mitchell is set to be busy.

There have been a number of targets identified ahead of the window as Toon boss Eddie Howe looks to improve the squad in vital areas to keep their good run of form going.

Newcastle’s win against Manchester United made it four Premier League wins in a row – putting them three points off Chelsea in fourth, and only five points off surprise high-flyers Nottingham Forest in second.

Howe will be eager to see his side back in European competition next season – the Toon boss has handed Mitchell his January transfer wishlist which is believed to include a striker, winger and goalkeeper.

The hope is that there is enough room to improve elsewhere, expiring contracts mean Newcastle will lose Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles in the summer if they don’t sign new deals – a player identified as a potential replacement is Fikayo Tomori, who has been hailed as ‘extraordinary’.

The defender looked to be available for a good fee, but a recent report now suggests otherwise.

Fikayo Tomori’s fee increases amid Newcastle interest

Tomori is a Newcastle target with the 27-year-old reportedly looking for a move back to England after leaving for AC Milan in 2022 following a successful loan spell.

After winning the league and playing 157 games for the Italian side, his game time has been limited this season. Since October, Tomori has only played 13 minutes of Serie A football while Milan struggles to pick up results and drop further down the table.

According to CaughtOffside, Milan is now asking for £31.5million for Tomori, more than the original £20m reported despite his lack of minutes.

The Magpies spent the summer window chasing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but after several failed bids Mitchell is now looking elsewhere.

The report also suggests that Juventus is interested in England international, but their priorities in defence lie elsewhere.

Fikayo Tomori to replace Fabian Schar at Newcastle

The Magpies look to be set on the left side of defence, Sven Botman’s return is imminent while Dan Burn continues to impress.

With Schar soon to be out of contract, Tomori would be the right-sided defender who would come to the club in his place.

Schar has enjoyed a great season so far, helping the Magpies up to fifth in the Premier League thanks to his goals and fearlessness. However, a yellow card against Man United means he will miss Newcastle’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Swiss international is now 33, Howe wants to keep Schar but now must look to longer-term replacements due to his age.
