Paul Mitchell is trying to sell longstanding Newcastle United players to fund arrivals in January.

Newcastle must sell before they buy during an awkward transfer window where clubs are most often reluctant to spend.

Mitchell is working on outgoings – Martin Dubravka is set for a move to Al-Shabab – after Newcastle’s game against Arsenal on Tuesday. Whilst Miguel Almiron has interest from MLS side Charlotte FC.

Elsewhere, Isaac Hayden is likely to leave in January. The 29-year-old hasn’t played under Eddie Howe since December 2021.

The Magpies are looking to avoid a repeat of the summer transfer window where Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold to help balance the books with PSR.

Howe did not want to lose Anderson, while Newcastle were reluctant to sell Minteh – the pair are now thriving at Nottingham Forest and Brighton respectively.

Recent comments from a manager in Turkey now suggest things could have worked out differently for Newcastle if plans in the summer had gone ahead, perhaps one of the pair could’ve stayed at the club.

Istanbul Başakşehir boss reveals Kieran Trippier Facetime call

In the summer, Kieran Trippier was linked with a move away from Newcastle.

Reports in the summer suggested that Newcastle considered selling Trippier while struggling to comply with PSR – a move never materialised and the 34-year-old remains at the club now.

In a recent interview with beIN Sports, Istanbul Başakşehir boss Çağdaş Atan revealed that the club tried to sign Trippier in the summer – he even had a Facetime conversation with the 34-year-old to try and convince him to join the club.

Atan was keen to improve Istanbul’s defence and saw Trippier as the right fit.

“I had a FaceTime call with Trippier in person,” he said.

“We tried to bring Alex Telles in a lot; We met with Reguilon. We chased the transfer of Onur Bulut until the last moment.

“We could have been in a much more comfortable position if those transfers had happened. We have to get a right-back and a left-back”

Trippier earns £120,000 per week, but has been more of an impact sub this season – Tino Livramento has taken his place in Newcastle’s starting XI.

Trippier’s Newcastle exit stance in January

As Trippier moves further through the twilight of his career, there is still growing speculation over his future at Newcastle.

Reports in December suggest Trippier still wants to leave Newcastle in January having handed in a transfer request through the summer.

Like Dubravka, Trippier is linked with a move to Saudi Arabia where he is more likely to retain his large weekly wage.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season, so Newcastle still have time to get a decent fee for the defender.
