Newcastle United might be higher up the totem pole than Brentford, but the Magpies certainly must envy their recruitment.
Brentford are one of multiple clubs who have an excellent recruitment model, which has resulted in teams like Newcastle United wanting to snap up their top stars.
Various members of Thomas Frank’s squad have been linked with the Magpies. Ahead of the January transfer window, Bryan Mbeumo was described as Newcastle’s dream signing.
Elsewhere, Newcastle have scouted Sepp van den Berg. The centre-back has impressed in red and white since arriving from Liverpool.
They are two Brentford players on Newcastle United’s radar, and now there is a third.
Newcastle United looking at Keane Lewis-Potter
Steve Nickson recently went on a scouting mission, as he watched Bryan Mbeumo during Brentford’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
However, the Magpies are also looking at another Brentford player.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are ‘keeping tabs’ on Keane Lewis-Potter.
The 23-year-old is far from being the flashiest member of Thomas Frank’s squad, but he is certainly one of his most reliable players. Lewis-Potter has featured in every Brentford game this season, playing on the left wing and at left-back. He has got two goals and three assists.
While Newcastle United have been keeping an eye on Lewis-Potter, they may continue to watch from afar. That is because he has a contract at the Gtech Community Stadium until 2031.
Newcastle eyeing a ‘special talent’
Given his bumper contract, it is difficult to see how Newcastle United could tempt Lewis-Potter to Tyneside. Brentford would be well placed to command a huge fee.
In truth, Lewis-Potter would not be a game-changing signing for the Magpies. However, he is a reliable player who could be an important squad option for Eddie Howe. I see him in the same mould as Jacob Murphy.
He is further evidence of successful recruitment from the Championship, with Lewis-Potter making his name at Hull City.
Back in 2020, his former manager Grant McCann told Hull’s official website that he is a ‘special talent’.
“The kid’s a special talent,” McCann said.
“Wherever we play him across that frontline, he’ll create and score goals. He can be anything he wants to be.”
He seems like a player who could grow under Eddie Howe, like he has with Thomas Frank. However, while Newcastle keep an eye on him, it feels like the chance to sign him was when he was at Hull City.
