Newcastle United still have a great chance of signing Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza despite efforts to extend his contract.
Newcastle United were busy in the summer transfer window, but may still need more additions in January.
Eddie Howe’s side have struggled for consistency this season, and the 3-1 defeat at Brentford summed up Newcastle’s issues.
Howe may believe that Newcastle need more signings in January to turn the campaign around.
Recent reports from Spain suggested that Newcastle are interested in signing Oscar Mingueza from Celta Vigo.
Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?
Celta Vigo’s plans for Newcastle United target Oscar Mingueza
Mingueza emerged in the Barcelona ranks and made 66 first-team appearances before heading to Celta Vigo in 2022.
The 26-year-old has proven himself to be a versatile performer, shining at centre-back, right-back and even wing-back.
Mingueza has even picked up four caps for Spain, and is set to become a wanted man in 2026.
The defender’s Celta Vigo contract comes to an end next summer, meaning he can leave for nothing.
Newcastle may be in a position to sign Mingueza in 2026, either on a free transfer in the summer or in a cut-price raid in January.
Celta aren’t giving up without a fight, though, as Faro de Vigo report that they will resume contract talks ‘in the coming weeks’.
Mingueza has snubbed Celta’s current contract offer, but he will now be offered more money to stay.
Celta want to sort out a new deal before the January window, at which point Mingueza can talk to other clubs.
Whether Celta can meet his demands remains to be seen, but they will hope to block any Newcastle interest by securing a new deal.

Newcastle United will be in a strong position to land Oscar Mingueza
Newcastle’s interest in Mingueza is understandable.
Not only is the Spaniard available in a potential bargain move, but his ability to play in multiple defensive roles is very appealing.
Mingueza can play anywhere across the back four, and recent injuries to Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall show that a versatile utility man in defence could be valuable.
Celta want to keep Mingueza, but Newcastle will be in a strong position if Eddie Howe and Ross Wilson firm up the interest.
Celta simply cannot match the kind of money Newcastle can offer in wages, and the lure of the Premier League will be strong.
Add in that Newcastle have been in the Champions League in two of the last three seasons, and a move to St James’ Park can help him take the next step in his career.
Competition for Mingueza will be fierce, but Newcastle should have a great chance to snap him up.
