Alan Shearer offers Newcastle United hope in signing ‘top class’ star after missing out in 2022

Alan Shearer knows what it takes to score goals for Newcastle United, as the Magpies aim to sign a new forward in 2025.

Eddie Howe currently has Alexander Isak leading the line for Newcastle United, but needs additional depth. The Magpies have been boosted by Callum Wilson’s return, but his fitness will always be a concern, while his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

That is why Newcastle want to sign a striker in 2025.

Newcastle United are long-term admirers of Benjamin Sesko

It remains to be seen who the Magpies will target, but one player who could be on their radar is Benjamin Sesko.

It was claimed that Newcastle United looked at Sesko during the summer, after failing to sign him a couple of years earlier. Newcastle wanted Sesko in 2022, but missed out on him to RB Leipzig. That ultimately led to Isak arriving at St James’ Park and becoming Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever.

The Slovenia international is a long-term target for the Magpies, while it has been claimed that Sesko is expected to change clubs in 2025.

What Alan Shearer has said about Sesko’s future

And in the eyes of Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, he is tailormade for the Premier League.

Shearer spoke about Sesko’s qualities on Amazon Prime before RB Leipzig vs Aston Villa, after being asked about comparisons to Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.

“He’s got the same frame as he has,” he said.

“He’s quick like he is. He can certainly travel with the ball like he can. He is very good at scoring goals. He’s very good at bringing other people into the game. I get the comparison [to Haaland].

“I like him a lot. I know he’s very young, only 21 years of age, so he’s got a lot of learning to do.

“But without a doubt there’s a top class footballer in there, and I believe it’s only a matter of time before he’s playing maybe even in the Premier League.

“It’s a matter of who can afford him. This football club has a history of making an absolute fortune on transfers, and this guy could be the next one to come into the Premier League.

“Either foot, left or right, which is great to see. The work rate, the running with the ball – he’s got all of those things. Very good technique, good balance. I don’t think there is a doubt in my mind that he would look very comfortable in the Premier League.”

Newcastle interest in Sesko could hinge on Alexander Isak

Shearer thinks Sesko could end up in the Premier League, offering Newcastle United hope of signing a player who they have missed out on multiple times – most notably in 2022.

But while Sesko has all the qualities to succeed in the top flight of English football, a move to St James’ Park feels completely dependent on Alexander Isak.

If Isak stays at Newcastle, there is surely no way that the Magpies will be able to sign Sesko. Unless Eddie Howe starts playing with two strikers, it would be impossible to keep both players happy, and Sesko is not going to leave RB Leipzig to be Isak’s understudy.

But if Isak were to be sold in 2025, Sesko could be the perfect replacement. As Shearer says, he looks perfect for the Premier League, whether that is for Newcastle United or someone else.

In truth, I think it will be for someone else.
