Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United future is up in the air.

The 32-year-old is in the final six months of his Newcastle United contract, and looks likely to leave the club in the summer.

There was even speculation that he could leave in January, but that is now very unlikely due to Callum Wilson’s injury.

The Magpies’ number nine is out of action once again, making four substitute appearances before succumbing to another injury.

It has been a frustrating period for Callum Wilson, who looks destined to leave St James’ Park in 2025. And, as it stands, it will be on a free transfer.

Callum Wilson contract update

However, that might change depending on how Wilson performs between now and the end of the season.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle United have the option to extend Wilson’s contract to keep him on Tyneside for another year.

They report that the Magpies might take that option if Wilson starts scoring goals when he returns from his latest injury, with the idea being that an upturn in form could allow Newcastle to sell him for a fee in the summer.

However, the flip side is that his injury issues persist and Newcastle are stuck with paying his wages for an additional 12 months.

What Newcastle United must do with Callum Wilson

Newcastle simply need to cut their losses with Wilson. In a perfect world we would get a fee for him, but what kind of money would he be able to command in the summer anyway?

It is not going to be an earth-shattering amount, while a new contract runs the risk of no one buying him and Newcastle having to fork out for his wages for another full season.

Paul Mitchell needs to ensure that Newcastle evolve, and that means freshening up the squad with new talent.

Alexander Isak needs a more reliable understudy, with Wilson unable to give the Swede the cover he requires. The hope will be that Will Osula can take Wilson’s place, but the summer signing is still very raw after his £10million move from Sheffield United.
