Newcastle United now know how much Liam Delap will cost them this summer.

The Magpies are looking at striker targets ahead of the summer transfer window, with Newcastle interested in Liam Delap.

The 22-year-old has played very well for Ipswich Town, but it looks as if he is destined to leave Portman Road after just one season. David Ornstein expects Delap to get a big move, but whether or not that is to Newcastle remains to be seen.

He is an exciting option for Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell, who are now aware of how much they might have to pay to land the 10-goal forward.

How much Liam Delap could cost Newcastle United

If Ipswich Town are relegated, there is a clause that will allow Liam Delap to leave.

According to the Daily Mail, Delap has a relegation release clause in his contract worth around £40million.

Of course, that is only active if Ipswich drop out of the Premier League, which is not guaranteed at this stage. However, it certainly feels likely, with Kieran McKenna’s side currently 18th in the table and 12 points adrift of safety.

How Liam Delap feels about Newcastle United transfer

A fee of £40million would certainly make him attainable for Newcastle, who will need to strengthen their striker department.

Callum Wilson is in the final few months of his Toon contract, and looks likely to leave St James’ Park. As for Will Osula, he is not ready to act as Alexander Isak’s main deputy at this moment in time.

In contrast, Delap is more than ready, having excelled in a struggling Ipswich Town side.

He is an interesting option for Newcastle United, and TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that Delap would be open to a move to Tyneside.

“He could viably be the Callum Wilson replacement,” he said.

“I think they see him as someone to add to their striker department, rather than leading it.

“A lot of teams are looking at him. He is on Newcastle United’s list and they like him a lot.

“I believe he would be open to joining Newcastle United. A move to St James’ Park would appeal.”

While that is encouraging, Newcastle do face competition for Delap. He is attracting interest from Manchester United and Chelsea, who are also in the market for a striker.

Given the queue for his signature, Newcastle will have to hope that the appeal of their project entices Delap, while they might also be able to offer him Champions League football.
