Joao Pedro is set to become the latest major target that Newcastle United have missed out on, as Chelsea swoop in.
The Magpies had been stepping up their interest in the Brazilian, and there was hope that Pedro would join Newcastle United.
However, he is heading elsewhere. Chelsea have swooped in for Pedro, as the Blues get set to complete a deal worth more than £50million.
The 23-year-old’s decision will disappoint and frustrate Eddie Howe, who is yet to add any fresh faces to his Newcastle United squad for the 2025/26 season. Instead, he has witnessed the club consistently miss out on top targets.
Liam Delap chose to join Chelsea instead of Newcastle. A deal for Bryan Mbeumo was too expensive for the Magpies. Dean Huijsen picked Real Madrid despite speaking to Toon officials about moving to Tyneside.
Now Pedro can be added to that list.

Newcastle United fans react to missing out on Joao Pedro to Chelsea
However, the reaction from some Newcastle United fans has been somewhat surprising. While missing out on some of the aforementioned players was seen as devastating, that is not the case with Pedro.
For plenty of Newcastle United fans reacting to the news on X (formerly known as Twitter), Chelsea swooping in to steal Pedro is simply not that big of a blow.
“Could be in the minority here but think we have dodged a bullet with Joao Pedro, he’s a bad apple,” wrote one supporter.
A second Newcastle fan added : “So Pedro has gone to Chelsea, can’t say I’m too bothered because he seems like quite a bad and dodgy egg. can we please hurry up with our transfer business though!”
This Toon fan noted: “Not gutted to miss out on Joao Pedro, more frustrated. Would hope as an organised club we have a few alternatives lined up.”
“Joao Pedro is not a blow, it’s a would have been nice a bit like Delap, Mbuemo was a blow, top player in a position we needed strengthening,” commented a fourth supporter.
This member of the Toon Army added: “Not remotely gutted about Pedro tbh. £50 million on someone who would be a back up striker? #NUFC He’s a pen merchant – and they’ve already got Palmer for that so.”
Finally, this Newcastle United fan wrote: “Joao Pedro didn’t want to join NUFC. He wanted to join Chelsea. I said months ago I’m not too bothered about him signing anyways. Not the massive loss people are making it out to be.”
Newcastle United’s Joao Pedro fear is coming true
Newcastle did want to sign Pedro, but there was always a fear that he was not fully convinced by the idea of moving to Tyneside.
It was reported earlier in June that Newcastle were worried Pedro wanted to join Chelsea, as that would allow him to live in London. Therefore, he would hold out to see if the Blues made a move.
Now they have made a move, and are closing in on yet another signing this summer. Pedro will join Delap at Stamford Bridge, as they get set to compete for a place in Enzo Maresca’s starting XI.
As for Howe, he will take his search for attacking reinforcements elsewhere.
