Leeds United have officially confirmed the signing of Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United, and fans have made it clear how they feel about his exit.

It is the end of an era on Tyneside, with one of the finest academy graduates leaving the club after 18 years and 214 senior appearances.

Sean Longstaff has officially joined Leeds United for £15million, leaving Newcastle United without their club-trained player ahead of the upcoming Champions League campaign.

Speculation around Longstaff’s future has circulated for the last year, with the likes of Everton and even Manchester United being interested in the 27-year-old, but he opted for newly-promoted Leeds with the promise of more game time.

Newcastle will reap the benefits of the Longstaff deal from a PSR perspective, but fans are aware of the player they have lost in the grand scheme of things. Upon hearing the news, Newcastle fans have made their feelings clear about Longstaff’s exit.

Newcastle United fans recognise Sean Longstaff lived the dream after joining Leeds

The Magpies will now likely look to sign a new midfielder after Longstaff’s exit. Newcastle are linked with Jack Rudoni of Coventry, but reports suggest he will cost as much as £30m.

Newcastle are left with a void to fill without their ideal squad player, but fans have recognised Longstaff lived the dream at his boyhood club.

“Done everything he was asked to do, one of our own Sean Longstaff. Keep your head held up high.” said one Newcastle fan reacting to his exit. While another added: “Thanks for everything, Sean. Lived yours & many of our dream.”

This emotional Newcastle fan said: “Never thought when this day arrived I’d be this sad. A local lad, a top servant, a glimmer of hope in a really s— time for us at one point & helped deliver the trophy we so desperately wanted.”

“He frustrated the hell out of me at times but I’m a moany git when watching NUFC. Lived every fan’s dream, lifted a trophy and gave 100% every single game he played. He’ll be missed in the dressing room I’m sure.” said another Newcastle supporter.

Another fan added: “Best of luck to him, lived every lad’s dream.”

Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Newcastle United must replace Sean Longstaff swiftly

Fans know he lived the dream, and they will never forget his best performances in the black and white stripes.

Games against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and his semi-final second leg showing against Southampton were particular highlights, but his ultimate memory will be winning the Carabao Cup with his boyhood club.

Although he did not play in the final, his winning penalty in the second round against Nottingham Forest was the start of a memorable run in the competition, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

It is now down to Eddie Howe and his recruitment team to get back to work and bring in his replacement with ease. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done, given the way this window has gone so far.
