Newcastle United are getting their wish as they prepare to sell Sean Longstaff to Leeds United.
Longstaff has been expected to leave Newcastle this summer, with the midfielder entering the final 12 months of his contract. A move away makes complete sense, especially as he will go down as pure profit due to being a homegrown player.
After rejecting an offer of £10million plus £2million in add-ons, Newcastle are selling Longstaff for £13million. The deal also includes £2million worth of add-ons, so the move could end up being worth £15million.
It looks like great business by Newcastle, who were adamant that they wanted more money for a player who has slipped down the pecking order at St James’ Park. It was a risky strategy, but persistence is paying off.

Fans are impressed as Newcastle United get £15m for Sean Longstaff
It is the latest example of Newcastle United becoming better sellers, with fans praising the club on X for how much money they are managing to get from Leeds for Longstaff.
One Toon fan wrote: “To get £12m potentially up to £15m for Sean Longstaff is fantastic business! He did his best for us and had a few brilliant moments but we need a higher level of talent.”
Another supporter added: “£46m for Kelly, Almiron, and Longstaff is great business by the way. Especially when all(?) of it is pure profit.”
“Can’t fault Longstaff for his work rate and commitment, he’s just not technically up to the standard of player we require anymore. I think this an excellent deal for both parties,” write this fan.
A fourth Newcastle United supporter commented: “This is a good deal all round and will give Longstaff more PL game time. Has given his all for the club and delighted he played his part in the historic League Cup win. Sentiment aside, it’s a good price for our 6th choice midfielder with a year left on his contract.”
“£15m for Longstaff is a great deal for #nufc. Wish him well, he’s been a great servant to the club,” added this member of the Toon Army.
Finally, this Newcastle fan remarked: “£15m for Longstaff. We have really improved our selling game. Beautiful.”
How Sean Longstaff compares to Newcastle United’s most lucrative sales
Getting £15million for Longstaff will go down as great business. It is pure profit, in a year that Newcastle have already sold Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly too.
Newcastle United have known they need to become better sellers, and they certainly are improving in that department.
However, the £15million that Newcastle are set to receive for Longstaff is not the most lucrative outgoing transfer in the club’s history.
That honour is shared between Elliot Anderson and Andy Carroll, who both left St James’ Park in £35million deals. They joined Nottingham Forest and Liverpool respectively.
After that, Newcastle’s next biggest sale is the £33million deal that saw Yankuba Minteh move to Brighton last summer. Then you have got Moussa Sissoko (£30million to Spurs) and Ayoze Perez (£30million to Leicester City).
In terms of academy graduates leaving St James’ Park, Longstaff will be the club’s second-biggest ever sale behind the aforementioned Anderson. Like the Anderson deal, Longstaff leaving will help Newcastle’s PSR position.
