Why Newcastle United’s new stadium plans have been delayed, it’s the right move

Newcastle United were supposed to announce plans for a new stadium before the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season, but have missed their target by a long way.

Fans are understandably beginning to get frustrated with the lack of talk about stadium plans, with many left wondering what will happen to St James’ Park.

Newcastle United are set to announce official plans to build a new stadium in Leazes Park, a very short walk away from the existing site. However, these announcements have been delayed despite assurances that they were coming.

Luke Edwards revealed there was a private promise for a stadium update, but it was yet another soft deadline missed by the club. Newcastle staff have grown frustrated by PIF’s slow decision-making, which could be a key reason why an announcement is taking so long.

With fans left in the dark over stadium plans, Chris Waugh of The Athletic has stated a major reason why the news has been delayed.

Newcastle United waiting for Darren Eales replacement before new stadium announcement

The consensus is that PIF want Newcastle in a new stadium, and it is now just a matter of when and not if for the move into a new ground to be made.

Sadly, that decision is still yet to come, but Waugh has suggested as to why. Speaking on his weekly Q&A for The Athletic, Waugh was asked about why the new stadium and training ground has taken so long.

Waugh suggested the announcement was delayed due to Darren Eales’ imminent departure from Newcastle. The 52-year-old was diagnosed with blood cancer last year but has been working a long notice until Newcastle find his replacement.

That search is still ongoing, but it is believed David Hopkinson is Newcastle’s leading candidate for the CEO job, though no official appointment has been made.

Waugh states that once a new CEO is in place, critical calls on the stadium, a new training ground, and major sponsorship deals will be made.

When Newcastle United’s new stadium is set to be completed

At this point, Newcastle fans are getting tired of waiting for the announcement on a new stadium. It will be a sad day when St James’ Park finally goes, signifying the end of an era.

Ultimately, leaving St James’ Park is a sign of the times and a decision that has already been made, although it has not been publicised.

With a new stadium surely on the way, its year of completion has already been quietly revealed. St James’ STACK announced its contract was getting extended until 2031. That year coincides with the year Newcastle’s new stadium is expected to be finalised.

Many will be shocked to learn that St James’ Park could be no more in just six years.

However, Newcastle have several opportunities to transform St James’ Park, even if a new stadium is built. Green spaces or a ground for the women’s team are options, but it remains to be seen what happens.
