Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is attracting interest ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old’s future at St James’ Park is up in the air right now. Eddie Howe has said as much himself.

Sean Longstaff’s Newcastle future is ‘unclear’ according to the manager, with the midfielder very much out of favour right now. His last Premier League start was in December.

It has been reported that Longstaff is open to leaving Newcastle. He could get that opportunity, with Everton interested in Longstaff.

Now another suitor has emerged, with the i Paper reporting that Leeds United could be interested in the Toon academy product.

They are set to return to the Premier League, with Daniel Farke guiding Leeds United to promotion.

Selling Sean Longstaff would impact Newcastle United’s European plans

While Howe has hinted that Longstaff’s future could lie away from St James’ Park, the club are in a difficult position with regards to selling him this summer.

Whether Newcastle United qualify for the Champions League or not, they will be in Europe next season.

Winning the Carabao Cup has given them a place in the Europa Conference League playoff.

With European nights returning to St James’ Park, Newcastle United will once again need to submit a squad list to UEFA. That squad must include four homegrown players who came through the Magpies’ youth system.

Longstaff ticks that box, while Howe has seen homegrown players in Elliot Anderson and Paul Dummett depart over the past 12 months.

In terms of their UEFA squad, Newcastle United might not be able to afford to let Longstaff leave.

PSR boost if Newcastle United cash in on Sean Longstaff

Alternatively, there is a massive PSR benefit to letting Longstaff leave the club this summer.

Newcastle have already improved their PSR position, but it could be enhanced even further if he were to be sold.

As Longstaff has come through Newcastle’s academy, he would go down as pure profit.

That would give the Magpies even more scope to reinvest, as Paul Mitchell prepares to freshen up Eddie Howe’s squad for next season.

The Longstaff situation is difficult for Newcastle, as they weigh up the PSR benefits against their looming European return.
