Newcastle United may have to sign a midfielder this summer.
Eddie Howe wants four signings at St James’ Park, with a centre-back, winger, goalkeeper and striker set to be targeted.
However, a new central midfielder could also be on Newcastle United’s agenda depending on outgoings.
It has been reported that Sean Longstaff is expected to leave Newcastle, with the 27-year-old slipping down the pecking order in recent months.
A move away for the local lad could result in a replacement arriving, with the Magpies already lining up potential targets.
Newcastle United interested in Championship star
They could even turn towards the Championship for reinforcements.

According to the Times, Newcastle United are interested in Coventry City midfielder Jack Rudoni.
The 23-year-old has only been a Coventry City player for a year, having joined them from Huddersfield Town in June 2024.
Rudoni enjoyed a spectacular debut season with the Sky Blues, scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists in all competitions.
One of those goals came against Sunderland in the Championship playoff semi-final, which Newcastle’s rivals went on to win.
He predominantly plays as an attacking midfielder, while he has also been deployed on the left of midfield.
Eddie Howe will love what Frank Lampard has said about Jack Rudoni
Going from the Championship to the Premier League is a big leap. It is an even bigger leap to a club that is in the Champions League.
Rudoni would have to work extremely hard to get to the level of Newcastle’s current midfielders, but he certainly has the appetite to improve himself.
That is according to Coventry City manager Frank Lampard, who has recently hailed Rudoni for his desire to get better and apply himself on the training ground.
“I work with him a lot because he’s easy to work with,” Lampard told BBC Sport in May.
“He engages, he wants to get better. He’s got great talent, he’s got great energy.
“We work on finishing. He’s so infectious as a lad. Sometimes when you work with a player and you see him grow and improve individually, that’s a real pleasure too.”
That kind of attitude to training will resonate with Eddie Howe, who has been a master at making players better since becoming the Newcastle United manager.
Look no further than the impact that Jacob Murphy has had this season. The 30-year-old scored nine goals and provided 14 assists for a team competing near the top of the Premier League, despite previously struggling to influence a side fighting at the bottom.
- Who is Jacob Murphy? The Newcastle United star who has transformed under Eddie Howe
Murphy has applied himself and proven to be coachable. In turn, Howe has moulded him into a dangerous Premier League player.
If Newcastle do decide to move for Rudoni, there must be internal belief that they can mould him into something similar.
