Newcastle United could now make shock U-turn almost a year after bidding for Marc Guehi

Newcastle United made their first offer to sign Marc Guehi 361 days ago but now their long-running pursuit appears to be over.

While Newcastle have wanted to sign a new centre-back this summer, Guehi does not look likely to be the player to come in to strengthen the squad.

The Crystal Palace defender has remained of interest to Newcastle but is in perhaps the best position an elite level footballer can be in.

Guehi has just a year left on his contract at Selhurst Park and could feasibly run that down before securing a lucrative free transfer in the summer of 2026.

Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle and Real Madrid have all been linked with the England international.

A move to St James’ Park once looked likely for Guehi, though a new update has now emerged.

Marc Guehi to Newcastle United almost “impossible”

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are not likely to move for Guehi at all during what remains of this transfer window.

The club did not want to try and sign the 24-year-old earlier this summer for fear of being dragged into another transfer saga with the south London side.

While Newcastle still do like Guehi, the likes of Leonardo Balerdi and Giorgio Scalvini of Marseille and Atalanta respectively have become more compelling targets over the past year or so.

Guehi to Newcastle is now seen as “unlikely if not impossible”, while the report adds that the signing of a new central defender is now on hold.

Newcastle United fans will fume at latest transfer U-turn

The idea that Newcastle can go into a Champions League season without signing a new centre-back will invoke the ire of supporters.

While all of Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles are good players and have been brilliant players for Newcastle, time is not on their side.

They are all over thirty years of age. Sven Botman is much younger, of course, but cannot be relied upon to keep fit.

Newcastle went big on trying to sign Guehi last summer, such was their desire to bring in a new player in that position.

One year on, despite being in a stronger financial position, Newcastle may not sign a new option there at all.

What a mess.
