Newcastle United’s striker search could lead them to Spain in 2025.

The Magpies are in the market for attacking reinforcements when the transfer window re-opens. Newcastle want to make three priority signings this summer, one of which is a striker.

Eddie Howe needs additional cover for Alexander Isak, with Callum Wilson likely to leave when his contract expires. Meanwhile, Will Osula is yet to show he is fully ready to serve as Isak’s understudy.

Newcastle United need to sign a striker, which will be very difficult. However, various options are being presented to them.

Newcastle United made aware of Thierno Barry

It has been reported that Newcastle will be offered Victor Boniface, while another goalscorer from the continent could also be available.

According to the Chronicle, Villarreal forward Thierno Barry has been proposed to Newcastle United by agents.

The 22-year-old has got eight goals and three assists in 23 La Liga appearances so far this season, having arrived in Spain from Basel during the summer of 2024.

Barry cost Villarreal around £12.5million, and will likely go for a huge profit if he is sold this summer.

Thanks to his goals, Villarreal are fifth in La Liga and pushing to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Barry is currently playing alongside Ayoze Perez, the former Newcastle United attacker who is enjoying a career resurgence since returning to Spain.

2024 was the time for Newcastle United to buy Thierno Barry

Given his height and athleticism, it would be easy to understand why Barry would appeal to Newcastle United.

However, it remains to be seen if agent proposals will result in the Magpies making a move for the French forward.

In truth, Barry is the type of player who Newcastle should have bought 12 months ago. He cost Villarreal similar to what Newcastle paid for Will Osula, yet he looks far more developed. While Osula has potential, he has only stood out against lower league opposition.

With Barry scoring goals in La Liga, Villarreal are going to command a decent fee if any suitors come calling. They will be keen to make a healthy profit, which is why the Magpies might be better served looking elsewhere.

Given Paul Mitchell’s new recruitment plan, Barry is the type of player who Newcastle needed to get before he joined a club in one of Europe’s major leagues. There was value in a deal in 2024, but perhaps not in 2025 and beyond – especially as he would be a backup to Alexander Isak.
