Newcastle United are behind Tottenham in the race to sign ‘incredible’ £60m player

Newcastle United have plenty of Premier League players on their radar as they eye up a new winger.

The Magpies have a £100million transfer budget this summer, and the majority of that figure is expected to go towards a new attacker.

Eddie Howe needs someone to match Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon’s quality in the final third, with Jarrod Bowen currently Newcastle’s top target. However, a deal for the West Ham United player feels unlikely.

But he is not the only Premier League talent who has been linked with a move to Tyneside. Noni Madueke is a target for Newcastle, while the Magpies could go back in for Anthony Elanga after trying to land him last month amid the PSR chaos.

Newcastle United linked with Pedro Neto

Newcastle United have also been linked with Pedro Neto, who could potentially be on his way out of Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.

The Portugal international is valued at £60million, which would make him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever. Isak currently has top spot, with Newcastle breaking their transfer record in 2022 to sign him for £63million.

That has proven to be money well spent, but the Magpies might not get the chance to fork out a similar amount on Neto.

Tottenham ahead of Newcastle in Neto race

That is because Newcastle are reportedly not the frontrunners to sign the 24-year-old.

According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in signing Neto from Wolves, and have an advantage over Newcastle.

They report that Spurs being in the Europa League puts them ahead of Eddie Howe’s side, with Neto keen to compete in a European competition if he is to leave Molineux.

Give Me Sport also state that the chance to live in London could also appeal to Neto, which is another blow in the Magpies’ pursuit of a player who Gary O’Neil called ‘incredible‘ last season.

No Europe is a big problem for Newcastle in the transfer market

With the lure of London and Europa League nights, Newcastle are behind Tottenham in the race to sign Neto.

While geography will not worry Toon officials, the fact they are not in Europe will. It is making it harder to improve Howe’s squad, ahead of what is a massively important season.

Newcastle already tried to sign Michael Olise, but the chance to play in the Champions League took him to Bayern Munich. Now there could be a similar situation with Neto, who wants the promise of playing in a UEFA competition if he is to leave Wolves.

The Magpies cannot offer him that this season – although it is a possibility in the future. Newcastle will be desperate to get back into Europe, as it is a big part of the PIF project. That will have to be the club’s selling point as they try to lure players, as they aim to convince them to join their vision for Newcastle United.

While a deal for Neto is not out of the question, it is going to be very tough to get him to Tyneside if Tottenham also make an official move.
