Newcastle United had a relatively quiet transfer deadline day, although business did continue after the window slammed shut.

Lloyd Kelly left Newcastle United, but he was not the final outgoing at St James’ Park during the January transfer window.

Newcastle loaned out James Huntley, with the 20-year-old joining Spennymoor Town on loan. That deal went through on Tuesday, as the academy midfielder joins the National League North side.

While Huntley left Newcastle United on loan, another player to come from the Toon academy also completed a temporary move on Tuesday.

Adam Armstrong completes late transfer

The player in question is Adam Armstrong, who spent the first half of the season in the Premier League with Southampton.

The 27-year-old has scored two Premier League goals for the Saints this season, but will not be adding to that tally.

That is because Armstrong has joined West Brom on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.

He is reunited with Tony Mowbray, as the Baggies challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

The move comes after Armstrong was linked with Sunderland on deadline day. A switch to Wearside would have been a huge shock, given the fact that Armstrong is a Geordie who came through the Newcastle United academy.

But Sunderland signed Jayden Danns from Liverpool instead, while Armstrong heads to the Hawthorns.

Former Newcastle United striker’s Championship record

This should be a good move for Armstrong, as his record in the Championship is outstanding.

Southampton won promotion from the second tier last season, with Armstrong’s goals guiding the Saints back to the Premier League. He scored 24 goals, including the winner in the playoff final against Leeds United at Wembley.

Armstrong was also prolific in the Championship for Blackburn Rovers, scoring 28 goals in 40 league appearances in the 2020/21 season. That was the best campaign of his career.
