Newcastle United academy graduate Adam Armstrong has been linked with a shock deadline day move to Sunderland.

The Black Cats are aiming to strengthen their squad on the final day of the transfer window, as they challenge to join Newcastle United in the Premier League.

They are in the market for a striker, with Liverpool youngster Jayden Danns heavily rumoured to be moving to the Stadium of Light on loan.

However, there has also been a surprising claim made about former Toon forward and current Southampton player Adam Armstrong.

Sunderland linked with former Newcastle United attacker

After leaving Newcastle United in 2018, there is a chance that Armstrong could return to the North East on transfer deadline day.

That is according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, who has reported that the 27-year-old is attracting interest from Middlesbrough. Leeds United are also keen.

Hope also mentions Sunderland, stating that sources have told him that they are not currently looking to sign the Geordie forward. However, he adds that the situation could change if Sunderland’s deal for Danns hits issues.

Adam Armstrong’s Newcastle United career

For a long time, Armstrong felt like one that got away for Newcastle United.

He was always tipped to have a bright career at St James’ Park, but only ever made 21 senior appearances for the club. Sadly, Armstrong never scored for the Newcastle United first-team.

Goals then flowed at Blackburn Rovers, where Armstrong started to show the potential that the Magpies knew he had. It almost resulted in a return to Tyneside, with Newcastle linked with re-signing Amrstrong.

However, he joined Southampton instead, where he has had mixed fortunes. It is a simple case of being excellent in the Championship, but not quite at the level required in the Premier League. He has made 20 Premier League appearances for the Saints this season, scoring two goals.

Given his ties to Newcastle United, it would be a major surprise to see Armstrong don red and white stripes. That looks unlikely to happen, as Regis Le Bris’ side close in on a deal for Jayden Danns.
