Newcastle United are now reportedly going to accelerate their bid to sign Anthony Gordon from Everton.
That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who has told Give Me Sport that the Magpies are ready to ‘fast track’ a move to bring the 21-year-old to St James’ Park.
Gordon is back on Eddie Howe’s radar, after Dan Ashworth failed to sign him during the summer transfer window. A £35million bid was reportedly made, but it was not enough to take the youngster away from Goodison Park. And neither was the £60million that Chelsea were willing to pay.
The Scouser stayed put, but has struggled to inspire his boyhood club. Everton are currently 19th in the Premier League, and suffered another blow at the weekend as they lost 2-0 to relegation rivals West Ham.
The Toffees are in turmoil, while Gordon, who has scored three times this season, is on the fringes. Everton’s number 10 is currently out of Frank Lampard’s starting XI, and didn’t even get off the bench at the London Stadium on Saturday.
It could all culminate in a move to Tyneside, with the Telegraph recently claiming that Newcastle were reigniting their interest in a player who Alan Shearer called ‘fearless‘ towards the end of last season.

Now Give Me Sport have provided an update on Newcastle’s interest in Gordon, with Jones suggesting that movement should now be on the horizon with just over a week remaining in the transfer window.
“Newcastle are ready to fast track their move for Anthony Gordon this month,” Jones said.
“They don’t know that Everton will sell now but they do know that the club aren’t in a good state financially, so feel it might be worth a try. It will be really intriguing to see if they can pull it off.”

With Everton struggling financially, they need to move players on to raise funds for new recruits. And while Gordon was not available at the start of the season, it was recently claimed that Newcastle believe they will now be more receptive to selling him.
That could certainly be the case given developments at Goodison Park over the weekend. They are reportedly set to sign Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal.
His arrival could open the door for Gordon to leave, handing Newcastle the chance to sign the winger they have wanted since the summer.
He might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the decision makers at St James’ Park clearly see something in Gordon. If he does arrive, it is because Toon officials believe he is capable of making a difference in the North East, and fans must get behind him.
