Newcastle transfer news: Toon to bid for Paqueta if they can't get Maddison

Newcastle United will reportedly turn to Lucas Paqueta if they don’t have a bid accepted for James Maddison.

That’s according to Foot Mercato, who claim the Magpies are willing to pay around £40million for the Brazilian attacker.

Paqueta has been tracked by Newcastle all year, and was the subject of a bid in January. It was turned down, and Eddie Howe’s side instead moved for his teammate Bruno Guimaraes.

But Toon fans have been keen for the samba pair to be reunited at St James’ Park, while the Magpies have continued to be linked with the Lyon star all summer.

Talk of a bid for Paqueta has lingered in the background, but a move could soon be on the horizon ahead of the transfer window closing on September 1st.

How much Newcastle will bid for Lucas Paqueta

If Foot Mercato are to be believed, Newcastle’s bid to sign Paqueta will depend on Leicester City and Maddison.

They state that he remains Dan Ashworth’s priority. Newcastle have had two bids rejected so far for the England international, and it feels incredibly unlikely that he will move to Tyneside. He is now in talks over a new contract at the King Power Stadium.

The French outlet state that Newcastle will make a move for Paqueta if the Maddison pursuit ends in disappointment. And they believe that the Magpies will offer between £38million and £42million for the Brazil international.

A bid nearer that upper limit could result in Newcastle breaking their transfer record on Paqueta. It was previously claimed earlier in the summer that the Toon owners could break the bank to sign the 24-year-old.

It has been reported that Paqueta could be available for as little as £33million. However, that surely isn’t the case if Newcastle are considering opening the bidding at £38million.

Regardless, he would be a magical signing for the Magpies and the kind of player who Toon fans will immediately hail as a hero.

He has a brilliant relationship with Bruno, and would add to the growing Brazilian contingent in the North East. We are also being linked with signing Watford’s Joao Pedro.

Foot Mercato believe Newcastle will go for Paqueta if they can’t get Maddison. That deal feels like it’s gone now, which could be excellent news for the fans who want to see Bruno’s best pal head to St James’ Park.
