Report: £13m player now asks to leave current club, with Newcastle trying to sign him

Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Adrien Rabiot from Juventus this summer.

That’s according to L’Equipe, who claim the Magpies, Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in the French midfielder.

They state that Rabiot has asked to leave Juventus before the transfer window closes. He could be available for a somewhat modest fee, with L’Equipe stating that Juve want between £13million and £17million for the 27-year-old.

A figure in that region would make him attainable for Newcastle, as they look to be careful with their spending this summer.

Rabiot was linked with Newcastle last year

This isn’t the first time that Rabiot has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Calciomercato claimed last October that Newcastle were interested in signing the midfielder. A move seemed incredibly unlikely back then – it was unclear what type of players the new ownership would target. We had cash to splash, but had to juggle the perils of being embroiled in a relegation battle.

We ended up balancing common sense with ambition, bringing in the likes of Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes.

Fast forward eight months and Newcastle are in a much stronger position. However, a deal for Rabiot arguably feels even more unlikely.

Toon move feels very unlikely

Signing the right type of character is very important for Eddie Howe. It laid the foundations for what proved to be an excellent January transfer window.

That’s why there’s surely no chance of Rabiot joining Newcastle. He had plenty of off-field issues during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, and he’s been unable to reignite his career at Juventus.

There’s no doubting that he’s a talented player – he’s played 29 times for France. But he doesn’t feel like a good fit at all for Newcastle.

His wages would also be an issue. He reportedly earns more than £100,000-a-week, and he’d surely want a pay rise to swap Turin for Tyneisde.

Juventus are probably just hoping we come in and take him off their hands simply because of our newfound wealth. But don’t bank on it.
