Newcastle United’s new recruits overall have been a success since their arrival in January. The team went on a nine-game unbeaten run in 2022. Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Bruno Guimaraes all arrived in Tyneside over the month of January.

More proof of that is Burn, Targett and Guimaraes have all been nominated for the team’s ‘Player of the Month’ award for March. The Toon’s Twitter account ran a poll where fans could vote for their choice.

Fabian Schar was the other player shortlisted. In many ways, he’s seemed like a new signing since Eddie Howe’s arrival. Under Steve Bruce, the Swiss international fell out of favour over time during his spell there.

Newcastle’s new recruits have brought real quality, improving the rest of the current squad

The Magpies haven’t solely relied on the quality of the players they brought in. Howe has been able to improve a number of the current players that were there when he first arrived.

But what the new players have done is bring out the best in those players. For example, Schar has looked extremely solid alongside Burn. The duo has looked immense together and has established themselves as starters for Newcastle.

Additionally, competition for places has been another factor that has seen members of the squad step up their game. Ryan Fraser has had a strong 2022, getting nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month in February.

Sean Longstaff is another who when called upon has held his own. The same can also be said for winger Jacob Murphy, who’s been unlucky not to have found his name on the scoresheet.

It’s clear that it has been a real team effort. These new arrivals aren’t just great talents but are also fantastic team players. Which is often an underrated aspect of football as a whole.

Newcastle looks likely to avoid the drop. Should they do so it will be a tremendous job from Eddie Howe and his players. A few months ago they were written off by many and now relegation looks but a distant memory.
