Newcastle transfer news: Toon approach Arthur Cabral

Newcastle United have reportedly approached Arthur Cabral about a move to St James’ Park.

That is according to Goal in Brazil, who believe that the Magpies are one of three clubs to contact the Brazilian’s representatives about a move away from Fiorentina. The other two reported clubs are Atletico Madrid and Udinese.

Goal state that no formal offers have been made for the 24-year-old, but each side has enquired to see if the Serie A club would be interested in selling.

Cabral has only been at Fiorentina for a year. He joined in January 2022 for £14.6million from Basel, where he scored a sensational amount of goals. The striker found the net 65 times in 106 appearances, and that form earned him a move to Italy.

It almost earned him a move to England, with Newcastle eyeing Cabral shortly after PIF bought the club from Mike Ashley.

The Magpies wanted a striker at the start of last year, and Cabral’s form in Switzerland suggested that he would be a decent addition. However, Eddie Howe wanted players with Premier League experience, with Newcastle opting to sign Chris Wood for £25million.

One year on and Newcastle are linked with Cabral again, but it looks like he will once again miss out on a move to Tyneside.

Fiorentina snub Newcastle’s Cabral approach

According to Goal, Fiorentina do not want to sell Cabral, who has a contract until 2026. The report adds that he will only be sold if his release clause of £35million is activated, with the attacker keen to stay where he is.

Considering he will now cost more than £20million more than he was valued at a year ago, there is no chance Newcastle are going to make a move for Cabral.

While his numbers were impressive for Basel, he has failed to enjoy the same form since moving to Italy. He has got seven goals in all competitions since his arrival, which is two more than Wood has managed for Newcastle.

Now that Alexander Isak is fit, Howe has three strikers to choose from – adding a fourth for a large sum of money would be foolish.

Cabral is the second Fiorentina player that Newcastle have been linked with in recent months. It was claimed last year that their Brazilian right-back Dodo, who shares and agent with Bruno Guimaraes, had been recommended to the Magpies.

That is another signing that appears unlikely, with Newcastle heavily linked with bringing Ivan Fresneda to the North East this month.
