Newcastle transfer news: Dodo recommended to Eddie Howe

Newcastle United are in the market for a right-back, and have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Dodo.

That is according to the Chronicle, who claim that the 24-year-old defender has been recommended to the Magpies heading into the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with signing a new right-sided defender, with Newcastle looking for stronger backup for Kieran Trippier. The Magpies currently have Emil Krafth and Javi Manquillo, but Howe clearly wants an improvement.

And Dodo could be a long term solution. He is 24, and currently plays in Italy for Fiorentina. He had been playing for Shakhtar Donetsk, but joined the Serie A side during the summer after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Brazilian has immediately become a first-team regular at Fiorentina, but is already being linked with a move away.

Dodo shares an agent with Bruno Guimaraes

And a big reason why he has been offered to Newcastle is his agent. Dodo is represented by the same people as Bruno Guimaraes, who joined the Magpies at the start of 2022.

Bertolucci Sports helped bring Bruno from Lyon to Newcastle, and they could be working closely with the Magpies once again.

They also represent Andrey Santos, who is being heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park. And the Chronicle believe they have also recommended their client Dodo.

But a move might not be likely given recent news regarding Dan Ashworth’s right-back pursuit.

Newcastle already linked with Harrison Ashby

During the summer, Newcastle tried to sign Harrison Ashby from West Ham. However, a move collapsed. Now the young right-back is back on Newcastle’s radar, and is seemingly heading to the North East next month.

90min believe that Ashby’s move to Newcastle is back on, and that a January move is likely.

So if the 21-year-old does join, that surely negates the need for Dodo. And while the Brazilian is probably the better play, a move for Ashby makes more sense.

We need someone who is happy to act as backup to Trippier, knowing that his time will come in the future. They need to be given a clear route into the Newcastle first-team.

That is possible with Ashby, but not Dodo. He would surely expect to be playing straight away given his current involvement in Italy.

While Newcastle might have been given the chance to sign Dodo, don’t expect the Magpies to make a move.
