Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Basel striker Arthur Cabral.
That’s according to Goal, who claimed last week that the Magpies have joined the race to sign the 23-year-old.
It is also claimed that West Ham and Barcelona are keen, although reports have since emerged that the Catalan giants are no longer interested.
That means it could be a straight fight between Newcastle and the Hammers, if the rumours are to be believed.
And whoever does sign Cabral will be getting a striker who is in the form of his life.
Arthur Cabral already closing in on 30 goals for the season
A lot has been said about Mo Salah hitting 20 goals already this season, but Cabral is closing in on an even bigger milestone.
The Brazilian was in action on Thursday night, leading the line for Basel in the Europa Conference League group game against Qarabag.
It was a routine 3-0 win for the Swiss side, confirming their place at the top of Group H. One goal was scored by former Fulham midfielder Patjim Kasami, and the other two went to Cabral.
Incredibly, they were his 26th and 27th goals of the season.
Cabral has been unstoppable so far. He’s scored five times in the Conference League group stage, and he found the net eight times in the qualifiers.
On top of that, he’s scored 14 goals in 15 Swiss league games, helping Basel to sit in second place with a game in hand.
27 goals from 28 games in all competitions is remarkable. To average nearly a goal a game is sensational, no matter what level you’re playing at.
That’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi levels of success – two players that Cabral is outscoring this season.
Combined, Ronaldo (12 goals) and Messi (six goals) don’t even come close to the Newcastle target.
While the Magpies do have Callum Wilson, another striker wouldn’t go amiss. And if Eddie Howe’s side can sign Cabral, they will be signing a striker who is in red hot form.
He could have a Papiss Cisse-like impact if he joins in January.
