Newcastle United are trying to sign Matheus Franca from Flamengo this month, but the Brazilian side are now insisting that they do not want to sell the 18-year-old.
That is according to 90min, who claim that the Magpies’ offer of £14million was not enough. They want more than £17.6million for the attacking midfielder, as talks over a deal continue.
But while Newcastle and Flamengo argue over the price, Franca’s stance is clear. 90min believe that he is interested in a move to England, and is keen to sign for Eddie Howe’s side this month.
This claim comes after the teenager recently stated that his future was with Flamengo. It remains to be seen whether or not that is indeed the case, with Newcastle seemingly leading the race to secure his signature.
Other clubs have been linked with Franca, with both Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen rumoured to be interested.
But it is Newcastle who have made their move, as they look to increase the number of Brazilian players who call St James’ Park home.
Matheus Franca would add to the Brazilian contingent at Newcastle
The Magpies currently have two Brazilian players in their ranks, and they are both fan favourites. Bruno Guimaraes is the best player at the club, while Joelinton is the renaissance man.
They were both instrumental in the Carabao Cup semi final first leg win over Southampton. Bruno won the Player Of The Match award, while it was Joelinton who scored the only goal of the game.
The Brazil flags were out in force at St Mary’s, as the Toon Army toasted the latest efforts from their Samba superstars. And now another is keen to join.
The presence of Bruno and Joelinton is surely a factor in Franca wanting to join Newcastle. They would be able to help the youngster settle in to his new surroundings and provide some familiarity after moving from South America to Europe.
However, it looks like Newcastle will have to up their offer if they are going to sign Franca. 90min believe that Flamengo want to keep the player, and are insistent that he will not go for less than £17.6million.
The Magpies are trying desperately to tap into the Brazilian market, and have been linked with a plethora of young players from that part of the world.
After the disappointment of Andrey Santos, Dan Ashworth will be extremely keen to wrap up a deal for Franca.
Newcastle want him, and he wants Newcastle. All that remains is to agree a price, but Flamengo are adamant that he is going nowhere.
