The January transfer window looks like it is really about to start heating up for Newcastle United right now, with a bid reportedly on the table for Matheus Franca.
That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has stated that the Magpies have proposed a deal worth £14million to sign the Brazilian teenager from Flamengo.
Franca was first linked with a move to St James’ Park back in November. Brazilian outlet TNT Sport claimed late last year that Dan Ashworth was looking to sign the 18-year-old, with Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen also keen.
Now Newcastle have made their move, while Romano also believes there is competition from Ligue 1 side Lyon. They know a thing or two about signing Brazilian youngsters, having brought Bruno Guimaraes to Europe in 2020.
He is now a superstar on Tyneside, and Newcastle will hope that Franca can do the same. But this time the Magpies are going right to the source, as they look to tap into the South American market.

Plenty of players like Franca have been linked with Eddie Howe’s side in recent months. Interest in Andrey Santos came and went, while there has also been rumours involving Angelo Gabriel and Vitor Roque.
A bid has now reportedly been submitted to sign Franca, but it could be slightly below Flamengo’s asking price.
Flamengo want more money for Matheus Franca
While Newcastle have apparently offered £14million to sign the attacking midfielder, it might not be enough to bring him to the North East.
Various Brazilian websites, such as TNT and oGol, have stated that Flamengo will not sell Franca for less than £17.6million.
On top of that, the youngster recently suggested that he would not be leaving the South American side.
After scoring the winner against Audax last Friday, Franca told uGol: “I’m focused on Flamengo. My season will be here.”
However, those comments came before Newcastle’s bid. The chance to move to the Premier League must be tempting for Franca, and it would give him the opportunity to play alongside fellow Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
But while he might not need convincing, Flamengo will. Newcastle’s current offer is £3.6million less than what they want.
With a bid on the table, we should soon find out whether Ashworth needs to up his offer, or if Flamengo are happy to lower their demands.
Either way, Franca is an exciting player, and someone who could have a very bight future in a black and white shirt.
