Newcastle transfer news: Martin Dubravka expected to stay at Man United

Newcastle United inserted a recall clause in Martin Dubravka‘s loan to Manchester United, but the Slovakian is now expected to stay at Old Trafford.

That is according to the Chronicle, who believe that the 33-year-old will most likely stay where he is rather than return to St James’ Park in January.

Dubravka was demoted to Newcastle’s second choice stopper during the summer following the arrival of Nick Pope. He was signed from Burnley for £10million, and started the Premier League campaign in Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

From that point on it was clear that Dubravka was Newcastle’s number one in shirt number alone, and secured a move away.

He joined Manchester United on a season-long loan, where he will become a permanent player if he makes a certain number of Premier League appearances.

Dubravka is currently on zero, having spent the entire season playing second fiddle to David De Gea. The Slovakia international has made just one competitive appearance. That was in the Carabao Cup just before the World Cup break.

It led to speculation that Newcastle could recall him in January, with Howe set to hold talks with him. However, it now looks like he is staying put.

Dubravka to stay at Man United with Loris Karius in line for new Toon contract

Dubravka staying at Man United goes hand in hand with an update involving another Newcastle goalkeeper.

Loris Karius signed a short-term deal at St James’ Park in September, which is set to come to an end this month. However, Newcastle World have reported that Howe is happy to keep him at the club with a contract extension set to be discussed.

With Karius staying, Newcastle have no need for Dubravka. We already have three senior goalkeepers in the 25-man squad – there is no need for a fourth.

If Karius was keen to leave or hadn’t impressed, there would be a need for Dubravka to return. But seemingly the German has improved a lot since his arrival, and Howe wants to keep him around.

These all sound like sensible decisions. While Dubravka isn’t playing at Man United, he wouldn’t be playing for Newcastle either. His career is at a crossroads, but it feels like his long-term future lies away from Tyneside.
