Report: Eddie Howe will hold talks with Martin Dubravka this month

Martin Dubravka left Newcastle United on loan earlier this year, but will now hold talks over a possible return this month.

That is according to the Chronicle, who claim that Eddie Howe is planning to speak to the 33-year-old before the January transfer window opens.

Dubravka joined Manchester United during the summer, agreeing a season-long loan deal. It included an obligation to buy if he makes a certain number of Premier League appearances.

He is currently on zero, and has actually only played once for the Red Devils. That came in the Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa last month.

Dubravka’s move to Old Trafford hasn’t gone totally to plan, and there is now seemingly a chance that he could return to St James’ Park.

The Magpies included a recall clause in the deal, and the Chronicle state that Howe is expected to speak to Dubravka in the coming weeks.

Newcastle return for Dubravka would be a surprise

While there is a possibility that Dubravka could be back at Newcastle this season, it certainly would be a surprise.

Nick Pope has solidified himself as the club’s number one, thriving since his £10million arrival from Burnley. That was the transfer that pushed Dubravka down the pecking order and eventually out of the club.

There was no love lost from a lot of supporters, who were unhappy to see that the Slovakian didn’t want to stay and fight for his place.

But Howe clearly thinks differently. He recently spoke to the Chronicle about Dubravka, calling him an ‘outstanding goalkeeper’.

He certainly was that during his time as Newcastle’s number one, but those days are now over. If Dubravka does return, he will be second choice behind Pope.

It will be exactly the same position as he found himself in at the start of the season, making talk of a Toon comeback feel unlikely.
